Multiple Emergency Crews Respond to Mass Stabbing with Shots Fired on I-495 Near Washington, D.C.
Four people and a dog were stabbed, and a man was shot and killed by Virginia State Police after a violent crash on a highway near Washington, D.C., Sunday afternoon, authorities confirmed.
The incident occurred on the Interstate 495 Beltway around 1:17 p.m. ET following reports of a road rage altercation after a car crash. When troopers arrived, they found four stabbing victims and a suspect armed with a knife.
Authorities said the man refused repeated commands to drop the weapon. A state trooper then fired, striking the suspect. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died.
One of the four victims later died from injuries sustained in the attack. Officials confirmed the violence is believed to be road rage related and not terrorism-related.
The incident caused major traffic disruption along the Beltway in Fairfax County as investigators processed the scene. Authorities continue to examine evidence and interview witnesses.
Law enforcement officials said additional details will be released as the investigation develops. Motorists were advised to avoid the area while emergency crews cleared the highway.
