Authorities are investigating whether there were any factors that would be considered criminal negligence in the avalanche that killed at least eight skiers near Lake Tahoe on Tuesday, the Nevada County Sheriff's Office said Friday.
A group of 11 skiers and four guides was near Castle Peak, about 10 miles north of Lake Tahoe in California’s Sierra Nevada, when a football field-sized slab of snow slid off a mountain and engulfed them around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Rescue teams worked extensively in challenging weather conditions, deploying avalanche dogs, search crews, and air support to locate survivors and recover victims from the snow-covered terrain.
According to reports, local officials confirmed that multiple individuals were among those killed in the tragic incident, though authorities have remained cautious about releasing detailed personal information.
Officials stated that a full investigation is underway to understand the circumstances surrounding the avalanche, including environmental conditions, safety precautions, and response timelines.
Authorities emphasized the unpredictable nature of mountain conditions and reiterated the importance of avalanche awareness, preparedness, and adherence to safety guidance for backcountry activities.
