A semi driver, identified as 61-year-old Ronnie Andrews, was killed after his truck went off a bridge
A 61-year-old truck driver for Perdue Farms died Sunday after his tractor-trailer crashed through guardrails on the southbound Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel and plunged into the icy waters below.
Ronnie Andrews of Robersonville, N.C., was identified as the victim by Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel officials. The single-vehicle crash occurred around 6:40 a.m. near the North Channel Bridge on the southbound span, just south of Fisherman's Island, with no other vehicles involved.
Crofton Diving of Portsmouth, Va., recovered Andrews' body and the truck Sunday evening. The facility sustained damage to guardrails and curbing; maintenance crews made emergency repairs, but one southbound lane remained closed.
Perdue Farms issued a statement expressing condolences, describing Andrews as a valued team member and confirming cooperation with investigators. Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel Executive Director Jeff Holland also shared condolences with Andrews’ family, loved ones, and colleagues.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Officials indicated that weather conditions were not considered a factor, citing low winds, no rain, and fair visibility at the time of the incident.
