Willie Colón, architect of urban salsa music, dead at 75
Willie Colón, the Grammy-nominated architect of urban salsa music and social activist, died Saturday. He was 75.
Over a decades-long career, the legendary trombonist, composer, arranger and singer helped define the sound of modern Latin music. Colón produced more than 40 albums, with global sales exceeding 30 million copies.
His collaborations spanned generations and genres. He worked with major names including the Fania All Stars, David Byrne, and salsa icon Celia Cruz.
Colón was widely regarded as a pioneering force who blended traditional Afro-Caribbean rhythms with urban influences, shaping what became known as urban salsa.
Beyond music, he was recognized for his activism and outspoken advocacy on social and political issues throughout his career.
