VANDERBIJLPARK — What should have been a year of final exams, farewell assemblies and dreams of life after school has ended in heartbreak for two close friends whose matric dreams were cut short in the deadly Vanderbijlpark scholar transport accident.

Sagwadi Mathe and Thato Mcira, both preparing to enter Grade 12 this year, were among the learners who lost their lives after a scholar transport vehicle was involved in a horrific crash earlier this week. Gauteng police have since confirmed that the accident has claimed the lives of 14 learners.

The accident occurred as learners were travelling to school when the scholar transport vehicle collided with a truck on a busy road in Vanderbijlpark. Several learners were critically injured and rushed to hospital, where two later succumbed to their injuries, prompting police to update the death toll.

For families, the pain is not only in the loss, but in the futures that will never be lived — university plans, careers, and the simple joy of completing matric with friends.

Police have arrested the driver of the scholar transport vehicle, who is expected to face multiple charges, while investigations into the cause of the crash continue.

Authorities have also intensified operations across Gauteng, impounding unroadworthy scholar transport vehicles in a bid to prevent further tragedies.
