Authorities say Ms James was last seen heading to the beach at approximately 5am for an early morning swim. About an hour later, two men driving along Seventy Five Mile Beach discovered her body on the shoreline, with around ten dingoes reportedly surrounding her.

Police are currently examining whether the teenager drowned or whether she may have been attacked by dingoes. Investigators have confirmed she sustained what they described as “defensive wounds”, adding to the complexity of the case.

“It was obviously a very traumatic and horrific scene for them to uncover,” a police spokesperson said.

One of Ms James’ friends, who had been travelling and working with her, is reportedly receiving emotional support from fellow backpackers and local services.

Queensland authorities have reminded visitors to remain vigilant when swimming alone and to follow all safety guidelines when visiting areas known to be inhabited by dingoes.
