Tom Cherones, the acclaimed director and producer who worked on 81 of the first 86 episodes of the iconic sitcom Seinfeld, has died at the age of 86.

Cherones passed away on Monday at his home in Florence, Oregon, following a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease, according to a family spokesperson.

Key Role in Seinfeld’s Early Success

Cherones directed and produced the second episode of Seinfeld, titled “The Stakeout”, which aired in May 1990. He remained a creative force behind the show through May 1994, shaping the sitcom during its formative first five seasons.

Throughout his tenure, Cherones earned six Emmy nominations and shared the Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy Award in 1993 with creators Jerry Seinfeld, Larry David, and other producers.

Known on set for his relaxed style and signature Hawaiian shirts, Cherones became a beloved figure among cast and crew. His direction helped define the rhythm, pacing, and comedic tone that turned Seinfeld into one of television’s most influential sitcoms.
