Celebrated wingsuit pilot killed in BASE jump stunt at South Africa’s Table Mountain
Brendan Weinstein descended nearly 1,000 feet at a speed of approximately 120mph during a wingsuit BASE jump at Table Mountain, but failed to pull up in time before crashing into rocks, according to reports.
The 32-year-old daredevil was found with fatal injuries after diving into Platteklip Gorge on Monday morning. Emergency services confirmed that the wingsuit pilot who died during the fatal flight was Brendan Weinstein.
Authorities reiterated that BASE jumping remains illegal within Table Mountain National Park, citing safety concerns and environmental risks.
The incident prompted a large-scale search and recovery operation involving multiple emergency and rescue agencies. Wilderness Search And Rescue (WSAR) spokesperson David Nel said the operation concluded shortly after 11:26am once the pilot’s body had been safely recovered.
The fatal accident has renewed discussions around the dangers of extreme sports and the enforcement of park regulations intended to prevent similar tragedies.
