Brazilian Popeye Arlindo de Souza Has Died at 55 From Health Complications

By News Desk | Brazil | Updated Today

Arlindo de Souza, a well-known Brazilian bodybuilder famously nicknamed the “Brazilian Popeye”, has reportedly died at the age of 55 following serious health complications.

De Souza gained international attention for injecting mineral oil and alcohol into his arms to dramatically increase their size. According to reports from Brazilian media outlet Globo, he passed away on Tuesday in the city of Recife.

De Souza had been hospitalized since December after suffering renal failure. He was dubbed the “Brazilian Popeye” due to his exaggerated muscular appearance, which sparked widespread debate about body modification and health risks.

While an official death certificate has not yet been released, his nephew, Denis Gomes de Luna, stated that one of De Souza’s kidneys shut down first, followed by the failure of the second around Christmas.

Reports indicate that fluid built up in his lungs, leading to cardiac arrest before doctors could perform haemodialysis — a life-saving treatment for kidney failure.

His death has renewed conversations about the dangers of extreme body modification and unregulated enhancement practices.
