OAKLEY, CA: A 54-year-old man is in custody after allegedly opening fire on a Contra Costa County deputy sheriff, triggering a large-scale manhunt and hours-long police standoff Monday in a residential neighborhood.
According to the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began around 10:50 a.m. when a deputy responded to a report of a possible restraining order violation. The deputy located a suspect vehicle and initiated a traffic stop on the 4300 block of Gold Run Drive.
Authorities identified the suspect as Raymond Smith of Oakley, who reportedly exited his vehicle almost immediately after the stop and fired shots at the deputy. The deputy was not struck and returned fire.
Large-Scale Law Enforcement Response
Following the shooting, the suspect fled on foot, prompting an extensive search involving multiple agencies, including the Oakley Police Department, California Highway Patrol, East Bay Regional Park Police, Brentwood Police Department, and Antioch Police Department.
The situation escalated into a prolonged standoff before authorities confirmed the suspect was taken into custody after apparently shooting himself. His condition has not yet been publicly disclosed.
Residents were advised to shelter in place during the search, and officials praised the coordinated response that prevented injuries to the deputy and the public. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
