Sione Vatuvei, Vaea Tulikihihif Death Obituary News: Salt Lake City police identify two people who died in an incident outside a local meetinghouse
SALT LAKE CITY — A confrontation involving several people and an exchange of gunfire resulted in two people being killed and several others injured Wednesday night in the parking lot of a church where a funeral was being held inside.
Sione Vatuvei, 38, of Glendale, and Vaea Tulikihifo, 46, were identified Thursday as the two men who died in the shooting. Salt Lake City police confirmed that six other men were transported to local hospitals, with one later released.
According to police, the remaining five victims are still hospitalized with what appear to be non-life-threatening injuries. Police Chief Brian Redd described the incident as a “senseless tragedy.”
The shooting occurred just after 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the parking lot of a meetinghouse of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 660 N. Redwood Road.
Authorities said a funeral and celebration of life was taking place inside the church when the confrontation occurred outside. Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and are searching for suspects.
SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Officials confirmed the shooting happened near the corner of 700 North and Redwood Road. Police are urging anyone with information to contact investigators.
