LUANDA: Angola is in mourning following the passing of Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos, widely known as “Nandรณ”, who died this Thursday, December 18, in Luanda at the age of 75. A towering figure in Angolan politics and a historical leader of the MPLA, his death marks the end of an era.
Born on March 5, 1950, Nandรณ was one of the most influential political figures in Angola’s post-independence history. Over decades of public service, he became synonymous with institutional stability and state leadership.
Despite completing his Law degree at Agostinho Neto University in 2009, his political influence was already deeply established long before. His career reflects decades of governance, security leadership, and legislative authority.
Throughout his career, Nandรณ served as Commander-General of the National Police, Minister of Interior, Prime Minister, President of the National Assembly, and later as Vice President of the Republic.
His leadership left a lasting institutional footprint and helped shape Angola’s modern political framework. Colleagues, citizens, and party members have expressed deep sorrow at his passing.
