Bangladesh was rocked by violent protests in several cities following the death of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi late Thursday, triggering nationwide concern over escalating unrest ahead of the country’s general elections.

Hadi, a spokesperson for the Inquilab Mancha platform and a general election candidate, was shot in the head by masked assailants last Friday while launching his election campaign in Dhaka. He was later transferred to a hospital in Singapore, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Violence erupted in the capital early Friday after confirmation of Hadi’s death. Thousands of protesters flooded the streets of Dhaka, demanding swift arrests and justice for what they described as a targeted political assassination.

“This is not just an attack on one leader, but on democracy itself,” protesters chanted during mass demonstrations across the capital.

Authorities confirmed that several buildings, including offices housing the country’s two leading newspapers, were set ablaze during the unrest. Reports indicated that staff members were briefly trapped inside before emergency services intervened.

Security has been tightened nationwide as the government fears further escalation in the coming days, with opposition groups calling for nationwide strikes and international investigations.
