Peru | Deadly Train Collision Near Machu Picchu Leaves One Dead, 40 Injured
A deadly train collision near Peru’s iconic Machu Picchu has left one person dead and at least 40 others injured, according to authorities. The crash occurred on the single-track railway leading to the ancient Inca citadel, one of the country’s most visited tourist destinations.
Police confirmed that the fatality was a train driver, while approximately 20 injured passengers, including foreign tourists, remain in serious condition. Victims were transported to hospitals in the nearby city of Cusco as emergency teams responded to the scene.
The railway is primarily used to transport tourists to Machu Picchu, which attracts more than one million visitors annually. Officials said 20 ambulances were dispatched to assist in evacuating the injured from the remote Andean location.
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the collision. The U.S. Embassy in Peru confirmed that American citizens were among those injured, though police have not released the identities of those involved.
Train services to Machu Picchu were temporarily disrupted following the crash as safety assessments and recovery operations continued.
