Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum says 13 people died and another 98 people were injured when a train derailed on a rail line connecting the Pacific Ocean with the Gulf of Mexico
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said that 13 people were killed and another 98 were injured in a tragic derailment involving the Interoceanic Train in southern Mexico.
She added that she instructed the secretary of the navy and the undersecretary of human rights from the Ministry of the Interior to travel to the crash site and personally assist affected families.
Oaxaca Governor Salomon Jara said multiple government agencies had arrived at the site to assist the injured. Officials confirmed that the train was carrying 241 passengers and nine crew members at the time of the accident.
The train derailed while rounding a bend near the town of Nizanda. According to authorities, 36 of the injured are being treated in hospitals. Mexico’s Attorney General confirmed that an investigation is under way.
The Interoceanic Train, inaugurated in 2023 under former President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, is part of a major infrastructure project aimed at boosting rail travel and economic development across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.
Photos from the crash site showed rescue workers assisting passengers as the train lay partially tilted off the tracks, highlighting the scale of the rescue operation.
