AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT): More than two years after Jamilla Smith went missing, her ex-boyfriend has been sentenced to decades in prison for her kidnapping and murder. The case, which began with frantic 911 calls in December 2023, concluded Friday with a guilty plea and lengthy sentence.
Daniel Harmon pleaded guilty to murder and kidnapping in connection with the death of 30-year-old Jamilla Smith. He was sentenced to 45 years for murder and 30 years for kidnapping, to be served concurrently.
How the Case Unfolded
Jamilla Smith vanished in December 2023. On December 2, she made multiple 911 calls — first from Interstate 20, and later from her home in Aiken — reporting that Daniel Harmon had broken in and was chasing her. That call abruptly ended, and Smith was never seen again.
Smith, a 30-year-old mother from Aiken, was reported missing shortly after. The investigation was later upgraded to a homicide case, leading to multiple charges against Harmon.
Harmon, 34, of Beech Island, has already spent 748 days in the Aiken County Detention Center. That time will be credited toward his sentence.
