SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC/Gray News) — A grieving mother is pleading for answers after investigators say her 17-year-old son was found shot to death outside a Georgia apartment complex.

The pain in Tyesha Abdullah’s voice was unmistakable as she described the devastating loss of her son, Antonio Thornton Jr., known as TJ. He was her firstborn, only son, and best friend.

“They just left him there. They left my baby there. They left him out there for hours.”

Abdullah said her family is struggling to cope as investigators continue working to determine what led to the deadly shooting.

In a separate case, federal authorities announced charges against a man accused of shooting two National Guard troops near the White House.

Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, has been charged with transporting a firearm in interstate commerce with the intent to commit a felony. He is also accused of transporting a stolen firearm across state lines.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said the transfer of the case to federal court allows for a careful review to determine whether the death penalty is appropriate.

“Sarah Beckstrom was just 20 years old when she was killed, and her parents are now forced to endure the holiday season without their daughter,” Pirro said.

Authorities say another victim survived but faces a long recovery. Investigations in both cases remain ongoing.
