ST. LOUIS — Two days, two children shot in St. Louis. One of them did not survive.

The latest shooting ended in tragedy Wednesday evening when 14-year-old Samuel Williams Jr. died at the hospital. Police say he was shot just before 6 p.m. on Oregon Avenue near Miami Street in the Gravois Park neighborhood.

Injured, the teen managed to make it inside a nearby home, where officers later found him.

“It is so tough. My son is 14. This happened just blocks from where we’ve called home for the last 10 years.” — Mayor Cara Spencer

The night before, another child was shot. Police say a 13-year-old boy was wounded Tuesday after 7 p.m. on Canaan Avenue near Broadway. That victim is expected to recover.

Mayor Spencer says the city is working to understand what led up to both shootings and how to better protect young people.
